About the Client
Stonegate IT is a UK-based migration and transformation specialist. Award-winning and fanatical, the team has deep knowledge and experience of IT infrastructure and the hosted environment.
Helping clients move apps and data to new servers or data centres, they deal with infrastructure transformations and have a vast depth and breadth of knowledge around cloud technologies. Their clients and partners include large and high profile businesses such as IBM, Legal and General and Rackspace. They also provide a streamlined service to SMBs moving small loads.
Stonegate’s reputation is built on its ability to deliver on time and within budget, often under pressure and in difficult circumstances. The challenges they work with often involve late deployment of data centres with fixed deadlines for completing the migration. Recently, they moved 400 servers in 6 weeks when the original migration window was meant to be 12! The team that built and maintains that reputation is vital to Stonegate’s continued success.
The context and challenge
Big clients and big projects require skilled and experienced teams and only when a project is live. When projects scale up or down, so too must the resource.
The overhead of permanently employing specialist, highly qualified engineers is not one a lean company such as Stonegate can shoulder. They want their resource to be as agile as their working practices: responsive, relevant and always in the best interests of the client.
Simon Mohr, CEO & Founder of Stonegate IT and expert data migrationist says, “We’re a small company with huge reach that wins very big projects. Downtime between projects means it has never made sense for us to recruit and retain a large workforce. We needed a more flexible solution.”
Initially, Stonegate was searching for a technical partner. Recommendations directed them to Mortimer Spinks where they found a business who understood their needs.
A virtual talent solution
Tech recruitment specialist Mortimer Spinks was familiar with Stonegate’s dilemma.
With a focused contractors division and well-qualified contacts in the tech space, Mortimer Spinks could provide the specialist talent Stonegate was looking for.
The team identified that a virtual bench of contracted, contingent resource would enable Stonegate to flex its workforce.
As a tried and tested model at Mortimer Spinks, this proposition would mean Stonegate could operate with confidence. When they won a project with IBM and its client Homebase, for example, and a team of 30 was needed on site within 6 weeks.
The project spanned 18 months and more than doubled Stonegate’s headcount. Spinks sourced, on-boarded, managed, retained and off-boarded all additional talent for the project.
22 people at any one time were brought onboard to deliver the project. Roles included programme and project managers, data analysts, network architectures, infrastructure engineers, technical architects and virtualisation SMEs.
The beauty of the model means that once a role is no longer needed, Spinks can off-board individuals from the project and maintain cost savings.
With robust systems and proven processes, this traditionally cumbersome process is effortlessly handled. Spinks is able to protect and enhance Stonegate’s reputation as an employer and supplier.
And the feedback from Homebase and IBM (and many other clients since) was glowing.
Mohr says, “The team at Mortimer Spinks proves itself time and again. It was the right resourcing solution for us.”
Stonegate’s partnership with Mortimer Spinks has enabled the business to continue to confidently pitch, consistently win and credibly deliver on large-scale projects.
“We’ve maintained our reputation for excellence,” says Mohr. “Our partnership with Spinks has endured now for many years. They’ve seen us through the tough times and the smooth. It’s a good working relationship built on honesty and trust. They’ve helped us win projects based on the resource they’ve packaged up for us. Our ambition is boundless with Spinks behind us.”
